Tirana is a city in transformation that, through continuous change, is striving to define a new architectural and urban identity. In new constructions, the approach to contemporary international architecture and its integration with art enables the conditions for a lively, creative city suited to younger generations. Through the reimagining of Tirana’s Aquapark, the intention is to recover a valuable asset of the city’s public life—an important point of reference for generations, closely tied to nature, sports, and leisure. The reconstruction project focuses particularly on youth: by creating appropriate conditions for the development of their athletic skills and strengthening their sense of community and social bonds. This project also presents a great opportunity to reimagine not only the architecture of the buildings but also the landscape and public space—through innovative solutions that favor flexible use beyond the defined function of the structure.
A key priority of the project is the integration of the Aquapark with the urban and natural context surrounding it, including the Artificial Lake Park, the Olympic Park, the Zoo and Botanical Gardens, as well as the nearby residential areas with mixed functions that have seen significant development in this zone. The integration of the project with the green space network, public parking infrastructure, and pedestrian and bicycle accessibility will ensure not only functional connectivity but also social and environmental synergy, making the Aquapark a vital hub of urban and recreational life in Tirana. Another important aspect of this intervention is the updating of the facility’s technical systems—an opportunity that holds significant potential for industrial and graphic design related to the technical elements and sports equipment of the structure.
To achieve a valuable project that best harnesses the creativity and innovation of local and international professionals—and that gathers the best ideas in architecture—the city is organizing this international architectural design competition. For these reasons, we invite all interested architecture studios to participate in the competition and contribute with ideas and proposals that will bring meaningful and sustainable change to this important public space in the capital. Let us build together the future of the Tirana Aquapark, creating a space that inspires, connects, and revitalizes our community.
